about

Less than poverty, which I didn't really see, what struck me most about West Africa was the fact that I was so free to cross borders with my British passport, but people there spent their lives, litterally sometimes, trying to cross them. That and the confusion in my mind on walking through 'the city' with it's shiny buildings after my flip-flop wanderings resulted in this song.

lyrics

They put doors on the shores of a foreign land
It wasn’t their land, but they held the keys.
It’s not your land so give back the keys, or take away the doors.
They put doors on the shores of a foreign land,
took gold from the soul of a foreign land and look how tall and proud they stand.

It’s not your land, so take away the doors. It’s not your soil beyond those shores.
Where people were bought, people were sold.
People were taught, people were told, to respect the new leaders of the world.
“Respect the new and forget about the old.”
They put doors on the shores of a foreign land,
took gold from the soul of a foreign land and look how tall and proud they stand.
